Most grants for park playground equipment in California come from California State Parks, federal park funds, or matching programs run by manufacturers. Qualifying nonprofits, cities, and counties can apply for state funding of $200,000 to $8,500,000, or they may pair equipment discounts with local matches.

Federal and National Programs Open to California Groups

Not a town or park district? Our grants finder lists the programs that schools, churches, preschools, nonprofits and HOAs can use.

  • Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership

Larger cities and towns compete for these federal park grants. Communities of 25,000 people or more are eligible.

  • Community Development Block Grant

Cities and counties may spend federal money on community projects like parks. Smaller towns apply through the state, while large urban counties and cities with 50,000 people or more receive it directly.

  • USDA Community Facilities Direct Loan and Grant

Small rural towns can get loans and grants for equipment and community buildings. Only rural places with 20,000 residents or fewer qualify.

  • KABOOM Community-Built Playspace grants

KABOOM and its funding partners design and build a playground with you. Only cities and metro areas listed by KABOOM on its site at the time are eligible.

  • American Academy of Dermatology Shade Structure Grant

As much as $8,000 toward a permanent shade structure. Your group must have kept a sun-safety program going for a year or longer before it applies.

  • GameTime Community Champions matching funds (a manufacturer program)

On its own play systems, GameTime adds extra equipment value. The biggest share, as much as the whole price, goes to orders over $75,000 paid in full; smaller or financed orders get less. Within the lower 48 states (every state but Alaska and Hawaii), this offer applies only to GameTime play systems.

  • BCI Burke matching funds (a manufacturer program)

You can receive up to 100% in matching funds for a new Burke outdoor fitness course or playground. Schools, parks, towns and other groups qualify if their last Burke playground purchase was more than three years ago.

Applying for Park Grants as a California Town

California State Parks manages the Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Program plus the state office for the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund. Since payout methods differ for these two programs, a town committee plans its application using three steps:

  • Choose the program that suits your population and cash flow. Local matches are not required for the state park program. Its $188.5 million round, closing December 17, 2026, will fund projects at $200,000 to $8,500,000 each. A 50% local match is required by the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund, meaning your community pays that share. The Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership also lets cities and towns of 25,000 people or more compete for up to 50% project funding.
  • Arrange upfront construction money if you use federal park funds. Both federal park programs work as reimbursements, so your town pays invoices first and gets paid back after work finishes.
  • Collect itemized quotes for the site before you apply. Reviewers require a full budget for freight, installation, the play structure, and ground surface.

How Much Does Playground Equipment Cost in California?

You can estimate your total budget using one number: the count of children who will play at the same time. A California park budget starts with the structure, about $1,000 per child for commercial playground equipment. After that come freight, about 15% of the equipment price; installation, 25 to 35%; and 75 square feet per child of safety surface underneath.

Playground CapacityEquipment OnlyTotal With Wood Fiber
15 children at once$15,000$24,900 to $28,700
30 children at once$30,000$49,900 to $57,400
50 children at once$50,000$83,100 to $95,600
80 children at once$80,000$133,000 to $153,000

If you choose poured in place rubber over engineered wood fiber, a playground for 30 children costs $62,300 to $85,500 because the rubber surface alone is $20,300 to $40,500.

Funding Choices for Rural Towns, Cities, and Shade Projects

City neighborhoods and smaller towns may also use rural development and housing funds for park projects. A block grant gives federal money to local or state governments so they can spend it on community needs like parks. Direct Community Development Block Grant funding with no match goes to urban counties and cities having 50,000 residents or more, whereas smaller towns apply via the state to serve low- and moderate-income residents.

Loans and grants come from Community Facilities, a federal program for rural towns of 20,000 people or fewer. They can cover as much as 75% of essential equipment costs in the smallest places with the lowest incomes. The American Academy of Dermatology also offers up to $8,000 to build a permanent shade structure, as long as your site has kept a sun-safety program running for one year or more.

Matching Funds From Equipment Manufacturers

Another option exists for churches, private schools, preschools, or neighborhood associations that do not qualify for public park grants: national grant programs and playground equipment manufacturers. GameTime offers Community Champions matching funds that lower the equipment price instead of giving a cash award. For play systems sold inside the contiguous United States, GameTime offers matching funds. Paid in full, a system above $75,000 can earn up to 100%; a system priced from $25,000 to $75,000 can earn up to 80%. Credit purchases above $25,000 earn up to 65%.

Once you have counted the children who will play at the same time, you are ready to send one short quote request to the playground equipment dealers and manufacturers' representatives, who then quote the equipment, surfacing and installation your site needs.

Get quotes from playground dealers

Tell us about the site once. Dealers who sell commercial playground equipment in your area use it to quote equipment, surfacing and installation.

By sending this request, you agree that playground equipment dealers and manufacturers' representatives may email or call you about this project, including by automated means. Agreeing is not a condition of buying anything.
