To get playground equipment grants, special districts, counties, and cities in Texas apply to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, which reimburses 50% of project costs via local park grants. Federal grants and manufacturer matching funds are also available to qualifying communities.

Federal and National Programs Open to Texas Groups

Not a town or park district? Our grants finder lists the programs that schools, churches, preschools, nonprofits and HOAs can use.

  • Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership

Larger cities and towns compete for these federal park grants. Communities of 25,000 people or more are eligible.

  • Community Development Block Grant

Cities and counties may spend federal money on community projects like parks. Smaller towns apply through the state, while large urban counties and cities with 50,000 people or more receive it directly.

  • USDA Community Facilities Direct Loan and Grant

Small rural towns can get loans and grants for equipment and community buildings. Only rural places with 20,000 residents or fewer qualify.

  • KABOOM Community-Built Playspace grants

KABOOM and its funding partners design and build a playground with you. Only cities and metro areas listed by KABOOM on its site at the time are eligible.

  • American Academy of Dermatology Shade Structure Grant

As much as $8,000 toward a permanent shade structure. Your group must have kept a sun-safety program going for a year or longer before it applies.

  • GameTime Community Champions matching funds (a manufacturer program)

On its own play systems, GameTime adds extra equipment value. The biggest share, as much as the whole price, goes to orders over $75,000 paid in full; smaller or financed orders get less. Within the lower 48 states (every state but Alaska and Hawaii), this offer applies only to GameTime play systems.

  • BCI Burke matching funds (a manufacturer program)

You can receive up to 100% in matching funds for a new Burke outdoor fitness course or playground. Schools, parks, towns and other groups qualify if their last Burke playground purchase was more than three years ago.

How to Apply Through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department

Using one state office, towns and park boards follow three steps to apply for federal park money and state recreation funds.

  • Since the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department administers its five Local Park Grant programs plus the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund rounds in Texas, check that your applicant is a city, a county, a river authority, a municipal utility district, or another special district.
  • Choose the path that suits your town. State awards in January 2026 reached $750,000 for outdoor projects outside urban areas, such as phase one renovations of Steeplechase Park, and $150,000 as a small community grant for phase two upgrades at Gatesville Sports Complex. Communities with 25,000 people or more may also compete for Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership grants.
  • Set your local budget ahead of time. State park grants have an annual deadline of August 1; the state sets the deadline for federal rounds. Have the budget ready before either date. With both, the grant reimburses 50% of costs. Your group pays all the bills first, and the grant then pays back its half.

Is It Possible for a Local Group or Small Town to Skip the 50% Match?

Churches, schools, and nonprofits outside local government, plus towns without a 50% match, have other options. If your park serves residents with low or moderate incomes, a Community Development Block Grant needs no match from the city. A block grant is flexible federal money; urban counties and cities of 50,000 or more receive it directly, and smaller towns apply through the state program. The USDA Community Facilities program gives direct loans and grants in rural areas of 20,000 people or fewer. These can cover up to 75% in the smallest places with the lowest incomes.

Our playground grants finder lets local groups check private programs too. The American Academy of Dermatology grants up to $8,000 toward a permanent shade structure, without a stated match. A sun-safety program must run for at least one year first. In the contiguous United States, GameTime Community Champions covers equipment with matching funds. Systems over $75,000, fully paid, can earn up to 100%; systems between $25,000 and $75,000, fully paid, up to 80%; and systems above $25,000 on credit, up to 65%.

Texas Playground Equipment Costs

Your grant application requires a complete project budget that goes beyond just the play structure. Our playground cost estimate allows about $1,000 for each child playing at one time, for the equipment. Add 25% to 35% for playground installation. Freight runs about 15% of what the equipment costs. Plan 75 square feet of safety surfacing per child, using materials like engineered wood fiber or rubber poured in place.

Children and Ground AreaEquipment CostTotal Installed Cost
15 children on 1,125 sq ft$15,000Wood fiber: $24,900 to $28,700; poured rubber: $31,100 to $42,800
30 children on 2,250 sq ft$30,000Wood fiber: $49,900 to $57,400; poured rubber: $62,300 to $85,500
50 children on 3,750 sq ft$50,000Wood fiber: $83,100 to $95,600; poured rubber: $103,800 to $142,500
80 children on 6,000 sq ft$80,000Wood fiber: $133,000 to $153,000; poured rubber: $166,000 to $228,000

How to Get Quotes Before Your Grant Deadline

A park built for 30 children with engineered wood fiber totals $49,900 to $57,400 installed. Of that, installation takes $7,500 to $10,500, freight $4,500, and the ground surface alone $7,900 to $12,400. The play structure is the only part that manufacturer matching funds discount. So ask Texas dealers and manufacturers for written prices on the playground equipment they will supply and install at your site. Playground equipment dealers and manufacturers' representatives can provide quotes for equipment, surfacing, and installation if you send one short quote request.

Get quotes from playground dealers

Tell us about the site once. Dealers who sell commercial playground equipment in your area use it to quote equipment, surfacing and installation.

By sending this request, you agree that playground equipment dealers and manufacturers' representatives may email or call you about this project, including by automated means. Agreeing is not a condition of buying anything.
