Michigan Programs That Pay for Playgrounds
| Program | Award | Match and payment | Who applies | Timing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Run by Michigan Department of Natural Resources | $15,000 to $400,000 for development projects | Local match scored (more match ranks higher) | A DNR-approved five-year recreation plan is required for state and local government units, certain school districts, or recreation authorities to qualify. | Board recommendations each December |
| Land and Water Conservation Fund Run by Michigan Department of Natural Resources | These grants match funding for park land and outdoor recreation facilities, including playgrounds. | Usually 50% local match, paid as a reimbursement | Towns, counties, park districts and other public bodies | The Michigan Department of Natural Resources sets the deadlines |
In Michigan, which playground equipment grants parks and schools can use depends on land ownership. Towns and school districts may seek state and federal park funds, whereas churches, preschools, and nonprofits rely on matching funds from manufacturers.
Federal and National Programs Open to Michigan Groups
Not a town or park district? Our grants finder lists the programs that schools, churches, preschools, nonprofits and HOAs can use.
Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership
Larger cities and towns compete for these federal park grants. Communities of 25,000 people or more are eligible.
Community Development Block Grant
Cities and counties may spend federal money on community projects like parks. Smaller towns apply through the state, while large urban counties and cities with 50,000 people or more receive it directly.
USDA Community Facilities Direct Loan and Grant
Small rural towns can get loans and grants for equipment and community buildings. Only rural places with 20,000 residents or fewer qualify.
KABOOM Community-Built Playspace grants
KABOOM and its funding partners design and build a playground with you. Only cities and metro areas listed by KABOOM on its site at the time are eligible.
American Academy of Dermatology Shade Structure Grant
As much as $8,000 toward a permanent shade structure. Your group must have kept a sun-safety program going for a year or longer before it applies.
GameTime Community Champions matching funds (a manufacturer program)
On its own play systems, GameTime adds extra equipment value. The biggest share, as much as the whole price, goes to orders over $75,000 paid in full; smaller or financed orders get less. Within the lower 48 states (every state but Alaska and Hawaii), this offer applies only to GameTime play systems.
BCI Burke matching funds (a manufacturer program)
You can receive up to 100% in matching funds for a new Burke outdoor fitness course or playground. Schools, parks, towns and other groups qualify if their last Burke playground purchase was more than three years ago.
How to Apply for State Park Funds
The state Land and Water Conservation Fund office and state trust fund are managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, which processes major park grant applications from eligible school districts, recreation authorities, and towns. Keep your application on track by following these steps.
- The state department must approve a five-year recreation plan before eligible school districts, local governments, and recreation authorities can apply.
- Your local match should be lined up early. Your community covers part of the project cost itself, through its own budget or donations, and that share is the local match. A larger match scores better with the state board, which each December recommends development grants of $15,000 to $400,000.
- You should plan cash flow for reimbursement when applying to the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which typically needs a 50% local match. Under reimbursement, your town pays project bills upfront and later receives its grant share back.
What Grants Match Your Organization and Community Size?
A local government should target a federal program based on population rules. If a rural town has 20,000 residents or fewer, it may seek federal loans and grants for rural development; in the smallest, lowest-income places, these pay as much as 75% of project costs. Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership grants let communities of 25,000 people or more compete to recover up to 50% of park costs. Where parks serve low- and moderate-income residents, smaller towns apply through the state, while urban counties and cities of 50,000 or more get Community Development Block Grant funds directly without a local match.
We advise committees for churches, private preschools, homeowners associations, and nonprofits to pair equipment and shade programs with local fundraising since they cannot apply for government park grants. GameTime matching funds help stretch budgets by adding value up to 100% of the purchase for systems over $75,000 paid fully, up to 80% for units between $25,000 and $75,000 paid fully, or up to 65% for credit purchases over $25,000. Has your school or nonprofit offered a sun-safety program for at least a year before it applies? If so, it can also ask for up to $8,000 to put up a permanent shade structure.
Planning Playground Equipment Costs in Michigan
Committees in Michigan budget for the full project when planning playground equipment, not just the structure cost. Our playground cost estimate figures about $1,000 for each child who plays at one time, just for the equipment. Freight comes to about 15% of that price, and professional installation runs 25% to 35%.
The safety ground surface you select greatly affects how much grant and matching money you must raise. Engineered wood fiber is shredded wood that cushions falls and supports wheelchairs at the lowest upfront price. Mixing and troweling rubber directly on site creates a continuous surface called poured in place rubber, which costs more initially.
| Children Playing at Once | Total with Engineered Wood Fiber | Total with Poured in Place Rubber |
|---|---|---|
| 15 children | $24,900 to $28,700 | $31,100 to $42,800 |
| 30 children | $49,900 to $57,400 | $62,300 to $85,500 |
| 50 children | $83,100 to $95,600 | $103,800 to $142,500 |
| 80 children | $133,000 to $153,000 | $166,000 to $228,000 |
After you determine how many children your site must accommodate, you can submit one short quote request to receive written costs for equipment, surfacing, and installation from playground dealers and manufacturer representatives.
