In North Carolina, which playground equipment grants your committee can use depends on who leads your project. While schools, churches, and nonprofits usually mix national nonprofit grants with manufacturer matching funds, counties, municipalities, and tribal communities may seek state and federal park funds.

Federal and National Programs Open to North Carolina Groups

Not a town or park district? Our grants finder lists the programs that schools, churches, preschools, nonprofits and HOAs can use.

  • Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership

Larger cities and towns compete for these federal park grants. Communities of 25,000 people or more are eligible.

  • Community Development Block Grant

Cities and counties may spend federal money on community projects like parks. Smaller towns apply through the state, while large urban counties and cities with 50,000 people or more receive it directly.

  • USDA Community Facilities Direct Loan and Grant

Small rural towns can get loans and grants for equipment and community buildings. Only rural places with 20,000 residents or fewer qualify.

  • KABOOM Community-Built Playspace grants

KABOOM and its funding partners design and build a playground with you. Only cities and metro areas listed by KABOOM on its site at the time are eligible.

  • American Academy of Dermatology Shade Structure Grant

As much as $8,000 toward a permanent shade structure. Your group must have kept a sun-safety program going for a year or longer before it applies.

  • GameTime Community Champions matching funds (a manufacturer program)

On its own play systems, GameTime adds extra equipment value. The biggest share, as much as the whole price, goes to orders over $75,000 paid in full; smaller or financed orders get less. Within the lower 48 states (every state but Alaska and Hawaii), this offer applies only to GameTime play systems.

  • BCI Burke matching funds (a manufacturer program)

You can receive up to 100% in matching funds for a new Burke outdoor fitness course or playground. Schools, parks, towns and other groups qualify if their last Burke playground purchase was more than three years ago.

How Towns Can Use Federal and State Grants for Parks

The North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation runs the state Parks and Recreation Trust Fund plus the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund. These are matching grants, so the award pays its share only once your community has supplied the rest.

  • Check eligibility and deadlines. While the state office establishes rounds and deadlines for the federal fund, counties, municipalities, and tribal communities apply annually to the state trust fund. Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership grants also allow communities of 25,000 people or more to compete for reimbursement of up to 50% of project costs.
  • Build up your local match. A dollar-for-dollar local match is needed for the state trust fund, while a 50% local match is usually required for the federal fund.
  • Prepare for reimbursement. Because the federal grant works as a reimbursement, your town pays bills first and receives the grant share afterward.
  • Compare rural and block grants. Cities with 50,000 or more people, urban counties, and small towns applying via the state may use federal Community Development Block Grant funds for parks serving low- and moderate-income residents without a city match. Rural places with 20,000 residents or fewer can seek federal Community Facilities loans and grants that cover up to 75% of expenses in the poorest, smallest areas.

What Grants Are There for Schools, Churches, and Nonprofits?

Since the state park trust fund is closed to nonprofits, schools, and homeowners associations, they blend manufacturer programs with national awards found in our playground grants finder.

  • Shade grants. Sites operating a sun-safety program for at least one year may seek up to $8,000 from the American Academy of Dermatology for a permanent shade structure with no stated match.
  • Community-built playspaces. Working with local partners and funding partners, the national nonprofit KaBOOM helps plan and build a playground in cities and metro areas that appear on its website at the time.
  • Manufacturer matching funds. For «North Carolina» groups, as for buyers across the contiguous United States, GameTime cuts the cost of its own play systems with Community Champions matching funds. Pay a system above $75,000 in full and the match can hit 100%; full payment between $25,000 and $75,000 brings up to 80%; credit terms above $25,000 earn up to 65%. The equipment price is all this discount covers, so plan separate funds for shipping, installation, and safety surfacing.

North Carolina Playground Equipment Budgeting

Each grant application requires a total cost for the whole project. Our playground cost estimate starts with the structure, at about $1,000 for each child playing at once. Then come the ground area underneath, about 15% for shipping, and 25% to 35% for installation. Under the equipment, the ground area serves as a safety surface zone, sized at 75 square feet for each child playing at once.

Children Playing at OnceTotal with Engineered Wood FiberTotal with Poured in Place Rubber
15 children$24,900 to $28,700$31,100 to $42,800
30 children$49,900 to $57,400$62,300 to $85,500
50 children$83,100 to $95,600$103,800 to $142,500
80 children$133,000 to $153,000$166,000 to $228,000

When the count of children playing at once is clear, ask dealers and playground equipment manufacturers for written prices on equipment, surfacing and installation with one short quote request.

Tell us about the site once. Dealers who sell commercial playground equipment in your area use it to quote equipment, surfacing and installation.

By sending this request, you agree that playground equipment dealers and manufacturers' representatives may email or call you about this project, including by automated means. Agreeing is not a condition of buying anything.
